Mateo Mercur

Mateo Mercur has been a professional triathlon coach for nearly 15 years. From 2006 through 2016 he was the Head Coach of the University of California Santa Barbara Triathlon Team. Mateo has trained three Age Group World Champions, an Age Group WC Silver Medalist, and the Ironman Maryland Women’s Champion. Based in Bend, Oregon Mateo speaks English and Spanish.

I’ve been involved in the sport of triathlon for my entire life, starting as a junior, racing as an elite professional, and now full-time coaching. I tailor training for both newcomers and experienced veterans. Under my guidance, the University of California Santa Barbara Triathlon Team has consistently placed in the top ten at USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships. I first met Coach Sutton at a training camp in Cozumel while preparing my own athlete for the Ironman there. I felt an immediate affinity for Brett’s coaching style and the training methodology. I aim to be the best coach I can be and look forward to developing my High Performance and Age Group program in partnership with the world’s strongest triathlon coaching team.

I began my coaching career as a swim coach in 1997. I’ve been coaching triathlon since 2003. In the spring of 2016 I completed my tenth year as Head Coach of the University of California Santa Barbara Triathlon Team. For nearly two decades, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a full range of athletes across the disciplines and distances. I’ve coached three Age Group World Champions, one at each distance; Olympic, 70.3, and Ironman, as well as the 2014 Ironman Maryland Champion.

I use heart rate and pace along with power and feel to optimize performance in training and racing. My approach places a strong emphasis on technique, mental focus, and specificity of purpose in order to maximize each training session, week, block, and phase.

In 2014 I earned a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology, and I’m currently developing my thesis, Attachment Based Coaching: Neuroscience and the Integration of Heart and Soul in Sport, into a book for coaches and athletes. Building a strong coach-athlete relationship is an essential part of my approach to coaching. Whether an athlete is in my daily squad, at a training camp, or coached from distance, building quality communication and trust are key to that athlete’s success.

Mateo is a fantastic coach, he brings energy and enthusiasm coupled with experience and knowledge to the table. I have had other coaches in the past but following IM CDA 2014 an illness that took me out of triathlon for a bit, I could not have found a better coach to get me back in to the groove. Mateo is able to create workouts that fit in to my busy lifestyle while pushing me to exceed my goals. With Mateo I have had two age group podiums in 2015 at Wildflower Olympic distance and Carpentaria Olympic distance triathlon. Outside of triathlon he coached me to a 4th place finish at the Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset 100K trail race in 2015. The personal attention and Mateo’s wealth of experience can’t be beat. Mateo has been my coach for 10 years. When I began training on the UC Santa Barbara Triathlon Team, I had no experience swimming or cycling. Mateo has taken me from a total beginner triathlete to a World Champion in 70.3 and Ironman distances. My training looks different during different phases of the year. As key races approach the focus shifts to course-specific preparation. In addition to the physical training, Mateo’s ability to work with my schedule, manage stresses, and help to regulate my psychological state are all crucial to building the mental strength and confidence necessary to perform at an optimal level. I joined the UCSB Triathlon team with Mateo as Head Coach in 2010 during my first year in college. I came from a strong running background but never swam a stroke of freestyle and had zero exposure to competitive cycling. It was daunting to join a competitive collegiate team of men and women at all levels, but Coach Mateo is uniquely equipped to meet EVERY athlete where they’re at. He always used my strength as a runner to motivate me in the pool and out on the bike making it seem like the multi-sport lifestyle was possible. I was able to race at a competitive level at USAT Collegiate Nationals three years in a row and finished my collegiate career as captain and president of the team.

In my senior year I broke my elbow in a bike accident 7 weeks before our conference championships, leaving me devastated. With Coach Mateo’s commitment and attention to detail he modified each workout to maintain my fitness while I was healing. I finished that season with a PR at conference and nationals. The most important part of that story though, is that Mateo was so supportive during that time, calling to check in and offering to take me to doctors appointments when family wasn’t around. On a personal level, he cares deeply, creating a bonded coach-athlete relationship that drives each athlete to perform better than they thought possible. I’m not the most talented athlete on his resume but my story provides one with perspective that Mateo is qualified, versatile, and sincere.
